53W53 residence
New York 2019
Marking the studio’s first foray into New York, Fu took cues from Jean Nouvel’s bold architecture and its striking exterior to create a contemporary residence that celebrates all things design. In addition to using pieces from his André Fu Living furniture collection and custom furniture unique to the residence, Fu worked with French gallerist Emmanuel Perrotin to showcase distinctive artworks throughout.
Fu’s design approach embraces the project’s unusual geometry. ‘I wanted to showcase that there are interesting whimsical twists that you can introduce to turn the diagrid into a design element within the apartment,’ he explains. Next to the kitchen Fu built a custom Carrara marble counter that interlocks with the diagonal beam, a strategy that recurs in the master bedroom where a marble counter crosses the diagrid to create a small desk.
